PM Nawaz Sharif directs for continuation of subsidy on fertilizers

Rs. 28 billion allocated for subsidy on fertilizers

Lahore : Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Friday directed for continuation of the provision of subsidy on fertilizers to benefit farmers. “Agriculture is the backbone of our economy and farmers must be facilitated to achieve bumper crops for accelerated GDP growth,” the Prime Minister said, according to a press release issued by the PM’s Media Office here.

It may be pertinent to mention here that an amount of Rs. 28 billion was allocated for subsidy on fertilizers which was shared equally by the provincial and federal governments.

Upon consumption of the entire Rs. 28 billion, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research and Finance Division had withdrawn further subsidies on fertilizer.

However, the Prime Minister has directed that subsidy on fertilizers should be continued for benefit of the farming community and achieving the targets of major crops.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that PML-N government has taken unprecedented steps in the history of the country for economic uplift of cultivators and development of agriculture. He said that grandiloquence alone can’t address public issues, rather it needs practical steps and the whole nation is witness to the fact that negligence of so-called sympathiser of farmers in power sector is the reason of today’s deprived condition of our cultivators. He said that it does not behoove those to sympathize with farmers who closed their tube-wells through criminal negligence in electricity production.

Shahbaz Sharif directed Agriculture Department to provide existing fertilizer in hoards at subsidised rates and keep an eye on hoarders and profiteers so that subsidy on fertilizers should be in reach of the cultivators. He warned that strict action will be taken against those trying to increase price of fertilizers in the province.
