Ghazanfar Mehmood wins the 6th Chief of Naval Staff Golf titleLahore : Ghazanfar Mehmood of Garden City Golf Club captured the 6th Chief of Naval Staff Golf title after outperforming his challengers in a three rounds battle, contested at the beautiful and superb Royal Palm Golf Course, here on Sunday.

Punjab Governor Muhammad Rafiq Rajwana was the chief guest on the occasion and he praised the golfing skills of the participants.

Ghazanfar surfaced as the champion with a perfection oriented golfing performance on the final day and in the final go, he did not relent for a moment which speaks volumes of his talent and technique.

The all-round effort comprised perfect tee shots on the par 4’s and par 5’s, crisp approach shots from the 120 yards distance and some adept putts on the greens. And his card of par 72 on the final day was a tribute to his skills and enabled him to succeed and achieve glory because of his commanding performance. Over the three rounds, Ghazanfar had scores of 71, 73 and 72 and an overall aggregate of 216.

The runner-up in the amateur gross was Ashiq Hussain of Multan, who fought it out with guts and courage but somehow found Ghazanfar better and  a man in control. A consoling aspect for Ashiq is that in the overall reckoning, he lost to the winner by one stroke.

Ashiq had rounds of 70, 76 and 71 and a total score of 217 for the championship. The third slot went to Mohammad Rehman of Royal Palm. His scores for the championship was 224. In the amateur gross, the fourth position-holder was Tariq Mehmood.

As for the other contenders, Zunair Aleem faded out in the earlier part of the chase and so did accomplished players like Nadeem Aslam, Mohsen Zafar and Sajid Khan.

In the race for net honors, Farid Malik of Royal Palm really blossomed and won the first net which gets him a ticket to Europe. Asif Bajwa of hockey fame won the second net, Hussain Hamid stood third, Ameer Khwaja fourth and Shoaib Shams won the fifth prize.

At the conclusion of the event, the Punjab governor awarded prizes to the winners in a grand prize distribution ceremony, attended by Khan Hisham Bin Siddique, Vice Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Amjad Khan Niazi, Commodore SM Shahzad, Lt-Gen Mohammad Tariq, Ramzan Sheikh, participating players and families.
