Lahore : The 1st Meeting of the Provincial Bioethics Committee Punjab was held at the Directorate General Health Services. The meeting was attended by Prof. Asad Aslam Khan, Dr. Haroon Jehangir (Secretary PBC), Prof. Sadaqat Ali Khan, Prof. Muhammad Suhail, Prof. Tajammul Chaudhry, Dr. Abdul Majeed Akhter, Dr. Tayyaba Ijaz, Ms. Zeba Mir, Abdul Quddus, Dr. Iffat Shabbir, and Mehfooz Chaudhry. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Asad Aslam Khan.
Provincial Bioethics Committee, Punjab, was established on 14th March 2014, as an advisory body on “bioethics” to the Punjab Health Department (s). Essential functions are: “Promote & facilitate ethics” in healthcare services delivery, research and medical education; “Promote & technical support” to “Research Ethics” & “Health Care Ethics” sub-committees and “Institutional Bioethics Committees”; “Develop bilateral linkages” with the Bioethics Review Committees in public & private Medical/Health teaching institutions, Universities, and district health departments’ Develop guidelines on significant & contemporary health issues
Dr. Haroon Jehangir Khan, Secretary Provincial Bioethics Committee presented a comprehensive background, perspective and mandate of the PBC. The PBC members discussed, debated and agreed on various recommendations pertaining to various agenda items. It was decided that PBC should meet regularly on quarterly basis.
Prof. Asad Aslam Khan, Chairperson concluded the session with the remarks that it is pride and privileged to be a part of the Provincial Bioethics Committee (PBC). He said it is heartening to acknowledge the appreciable academic and operational credentials of the members, assimilated from multidisciplinary, multi-sectoral and pluralistic fields of expertise, representing both genders and reflecting a wide range of vital experience.
