Punjab MPAs defeated KPK by 11 runs in a closely contested match

Lahore: Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Sardar Sher Ali Gorchani and captain of Punjab Assembly cricket team MPA Mian Munir showered praise on Director General Sports Punjab Usman Anwar for organizing twenty20 cricket match between Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) MPAs in a befitting manner at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The two key members of Punjab Assembly expressed these views while speaking at the prize distribution ceremony on Tuesday night at the Gaddafi Stadium. Punjab MPAs defeated KPK by 11 runs in a closely contested match.

Praising DG SBP, Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Sardar Sher Ali Gorchani said Usman Anwar made wonderful arrangements for the exhibition cricket match. He also revealed that DG SBP’s excellent administrative credentials will also be acknowledged on the floor of Punjab Assembly.

The members of KPK MPAs XI were also quite impressed with the security and other managerial measures taken by Sports Board Punjab for the friendly cricket match.

Director General Sports Punjab Usman Anwar, in his media talk on this occasion, said it’s nice feeling to see politicians in the cricket ground. “Usually politicians show the prowess in the assemblies but it’s positive sign to see MPAs facing off in a cricket match,” he added.

DG SBP said such matches will definitely play an important role in enhancing brotherhood among the people of two provinces. “We want see MPAs of all provinces featuring in other games like hockey, football etc,” he stated. He said Sports Board Punjab is ready to host such sports competitions between MPAs in future. “Being hosts, providing best possible hospitality to our guest teams is our top priority”.

Earlier, both the teams were accorded warm welcome upon their arrival at the Gaddafi Stadium. Director General Sports Punjab Usman Anwar was introduced to all the members of both the sides.

Among hundreds of sports lovers, several popular figures such as former national Kabaddi captain Shafiq Chishti, world class spin bowlers Yasir Shah and Zulfiqar Babar were also present in the ground to enjoy the provincial parliamentarians’ cricket clash.

Punjab Assembly cricket team elected to bat first after winning the toss. The host team piled up 143 at the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Ali Salman remained the top scorer for Punjab with the knock of 51 runs. He struck some glorious shots to all parts of the ground. Syed Zaeem Qadri (27), Qazi Adnan Farid and Asif Mehmood (16 each) were the other notable contributors for Punjab team.

Shah Faisal picked up three wickets at the expense of 24 runs. Shah Farman (2/28) and Ishtiaq Omar (2/31) also made their presence felt by claiming a couple of wickets each.

KPK, in reply, tried their best to chase the required runs but fell 11 runs short of target mainly due to accurate bowling of Malik Taimoor Masood, who grabbed impressive figures of 5/16. Veteran KPK Minister Shah Farman exhibited wonderful form, fitness and stamina and scored 48 runs. Rest of the KPK batsmen failed to offer sufficient support to Shah Farman and lost the match in thrilling fashion. Shah Faisal and Gohar Nawaz made 14 and 10 runs respectively. Mehmood Cheema also chipped in with two wickets.

International umpires Ahsan Raza and Shozab Raza supervised the day/night fixture.
