Punjab University celebrates World Women’s Day

Punjab University celebrates World Women’s DayLahore: Punjab University Department of Gender Studies on Tuesday observed World Women’s Day at and organized seminar at its auditorium and colorful women’s gala at its lawns.

The seminar was attended by Prof. Dr. Zakria Zakar Dean FBSS and Director ISCS; Ms. Mumtaz Mughal, Resident Director, Aurat Foundation; Mr. Salman Abid Regional Director SPO, Mr. Sirfaraz Kazmi, Regional Director, FPAP, Dr. Ra’ana Malik, Assistant Professor Department of Gender Studies, Ms Anosha, youth representative, United Nations.

Addressing the seminar, Prof. Dr Zakria Zakir said that our society could not progress without input from women. He said that women must come forward and play their role for national and social development. He emphasized importance of the celebrating Women’s Day as it showed the commitment towards the cause of ensuring women’s rights.

Ms. Mumtaz Mughal congratulated the nation on the passing of Women’s Protection Bill and urged the youth to carry forward the message of violence against women.

Mr. Salman urged the men to work for the cause of gender equality.

Mr. Sarfaraz stressed that importance of education of mothers to reduce MMR in the country as Pakistan is among the countries having highest MMR in the world.

Dr. Ra’ana stressed the importance of gender sensitization of males to bring forth the cause of gender equality. Ms. Anosha explained the importance of SDGs and promoting gender equality through these goals by 2030. The department also cut a cake to mark the Women’s Day.

A large number of organizations and students set up stalls at the Women’s Day gala. There were stalls of jewelry, handicrafts, handmade items, games, food etc.

A very large majority of students, families and people from various walks of life visited the gala.
