Women protection against violence law is a bold and historic step of the Government

Lahore: Civil society organizations and Parliamentarians have welcomed the enforcement of the Women protection against violence law in the province, and termed it as a bold and historic step of the Punjab Government.Hameeda Waheed,Begum Zakia Shahnawaz,Salman Sufi

The speakers at a function organized by Aurat Foundation here to celebrate the unanimously passes of the bill in the house and later enacted by the Governor as a law. They said that for the first time in the history of the country a substantial protection is provided to the women against violence. They said that government responded positively to demand of the civil society organization particularly Aurat Foundation with active participation and cooperation of the Member of Parliament both from treasury and opposition benches.

A large number of the member of Punjab Assembly, civil society organization, provincial ministers including Begum Zakia Shahnawaz, Begum Hameeda Waheed-ud-Din, Retired Justice Nasira Jeved Iqbal, Uzma Bukhari, Faiza Malik, Dr. Nousheen Hamid, Dr. Farzana Nazir, Nasreen Nawaz, Shahzadi Shamim, Nighat Nasir, Madiha, Iffat Miraj, Shazia Kamran, Dr. Samia Amjad, Ramesh Singh Aroora, Sadia Aslam, Shumeela Aslam, Kiran Dar, Shuneela Ruth, previous parliamentarian Ms. Mehnaz Rafi, Sajida Mir, Amna Ulfat, senior member special monitoring unit of the Punjab Government Salman Sufi, Peter Jacob, Samson Salamat and others participated in the function.

The speakers called upon the government to ensure the effective implementation of the law and stressed to allocate the sufficient budget for the smooth and effective working of the various districts protection committee for women.

The speakers welcomed the provision of the law to impose the penalty/fine and imprisonment to the person for obstructing the protection officer in the official proceedings.

They said that the law is not against the men and strongly condemned those who are allegedly propagating its “Zen Murid” Law.

The speakers hope that the new measure would be adopted by the government to implement this law equally in the country.

Chief Operating Officer Aurat Foundation, Naeem Ahmed Mirza highlighted the historical efforts in preparation of protection of women against violence law.

The Acknowledgement Shields and bouquets were presented in the recognition of the services for effective participation in the legislation and drafting of the bill to the parliamentarians, women development department, activists from civil society, writers, columnist and media persons.

A large number of parliamentarians, legislators, civil society activists, from all over the Punjab Province attended the welcome ceremony of protection of women against violence law.

Addressing the function;Provincial Minister for Women Development, Hameeda Waheed ud Din has said that Women Development Department, opposition and government Members Assembly, Civil Society and National Monitoring Unit deserve appreciation on approval of Violence Against Women Act.

Hameeda Waheed ud Din said that struggle for women rights is continuing for a long time. She said that Islam has given maximum rights to the women but violence bill has been approved for checking incidents of violence in the society. She said that violence bill is against violence and not men. She said that through this Act, checking of violence against any person has been made possible.

She said that after consultation of government departments, parliamentarians, civil society and media, Punjab Assembly unanimously approved the bill. She paid tributes to the struggle of all for the approval of violence bill. She said that there are laws for checking domestic violence in most countries of the world. The Provincial Minister said that implementation of violence bill will be ensured.
