Punjab government will immediately purchase medicines for the treatment of hepatitis patients

Punjab government will immediately purchase medicines for the treatment of hepatitis patientsLahore: Punjab government will immediately purchase peginterferon injections of 18 crore rupees and new medicine SOFOSBUVIR tablets with a sum of Rs. 42 crore for the treatment of hepatitis patients.

This was decided at a meeting of steering and technical committee constituted for treatment and eradication of hepatitis presided over by Advisor Health Punjab Khawaja Salman Rafique.

Secretary Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Najam Ahmed Shah, Special Secretary Secondary & Primary Healthcare Ali Jan Khan, Director General Health Dr. Amjad Shahzad, Additional Secretary Salman Ghani, Principal Gujranwala Medical College Prof. Mohsin Aftab, Additional Secretary Technical Dr. Salman Shahid, Dean IPH Prof. Moaz Ahmed, In-charge Provincial Hepatitis Control Programme Dr. Sabeen, Chief Drug Controller Dr. Zaka, Director Pharmacy Punjab Usman Habib and other officers were present on the occasion.

Kh. Salman Rafique directed that treatment of poor and deserving patients should be top priority so that the medicine being purchased with crores of rupees could be utilized for deserving patients.

Secretary Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Najam Ahmed Shah directed the officers to complete prequalification of firms and other formalities for purchasing SOFOSBUVIR tablets for the treatment of patients of hepatitis C and give advertisements in the newspapers within 15 days so that all process could be completed with transparency and speed. Experts of technical committee recommended purchase of SOFOSBUVIR tablets with 70 percent amount and interferon injections with 30 percent amount out of 60 crore rupees which was approved.

In-charge Provincial Hepatitis Control Programme Dr. Sabeen told that Health Department has already provided peginterferon injections to all districts of the province for the treatment of 34 thousand and 500 hepatitis C patients.

Addressing the meeting, Khawaja Salman Rafique stressed the need of making programmes of eradication of diseases successful. He said that awareness among the people should be created for adopting preventive measures for protection from diseases. He said that the resources being spent on the treatment of hepatitis which is spreading speedily will be insufficient for the requirements of all patients.

Therefore, it is need of the hour that awareness should be created among the people so that spread of this disease could be checked, he added.
