PM Nawaz Sharif asks UN chief to implement UN resolutions on Kashmir

pm_UNsecy_handLahore: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif urged Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to play a role in defusing tensions between Pakistan and India and help end the cross-Line of Control violations for promoting peace in the region when he held talks with him at UN Headquarters, according to official sources.

The prime minister also called for the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution on the decades-old Kashmir dispute, and holding of plebiscite to determine the wishes of Kashmiri people.

At the meeting, which was dominated by discussion about Kashmir, the sources said that the secretary-general voiced concern over the tensions between India and Pakistan, and said his good office were available. Ban also stressed the need for a dialogue between India and Pakistan to resolve their outstanding problems.

The two leaders also discussed Afghanistan.

The prime minister said Pakistan sought to build a new relationship with Afghanistan and was ready to assist in promoting the Afghan reconciliation when asked to do so. In this regard, Sharif hoped that the process would resume soon.
The secretary-general paid tribute to Pakistan peackeepers serving UN missions around the world.
The prime minister  also briefed the secretary-general on domestic priorities and the fight to eliminate terrorism.
The two men also discussed the post-2015 global agenda for sustainable development.
Ban commended  PM Sharif for choosing Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi, a woman, to represent Pakistan, adding that she was one of the most active permanent representatives.
