Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah appointed VC of the Government College University Lahore

Prof. Hassan A. Shah Lahore: Out of the box measures are need to be taken for the uplift of public sector universities which have limited resources, said Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah, an eminent physicist and newly-appointed Vice Chancellor of the Government College University Lahore. He was talking to the academic staff of GCU and media after his appointment as 30th head of the 151 old academics Institution. Prof Shah, who has more than 110 research articles published in reputed international journals to his credit, has served GCU for 13 years as Professor and Head of Physics.

Prof Shah, a recipient of Sitara-i-Imtiaz, believed that Higher education institutions in Pakistan were in the process of evolving at a pace that needed to be accentuated. He said the key behind achieving the uphill task of revamping the academic landscape of Pakistan was academia.

“The universities can only consolidate their intellectual capital if they are provided with capacity to attract the most fertile minds and souls to their faculty. The best research scholars, men of letters and seasoned professionals pertaining to different fields of human activity should be converged in university campuses to enrich the students learning experience,” he added.

Talking about improving quality of university graduates, the new GCU VC said that mediocrity was infecting every segment of society. Universities need to fuel the imagination of their students so that the widespread mediocrity is wiped off. Argumentation skills, intellectual curiosity and power of imagination of students must be honed.

“I would like see an ideal university student eagerly looking forward to learning in classroom, laboratory,  library and social sphere such public speaking, theatre, music and playing fields,” Prof Hassan A Shah said.

The GCU 29th head vowed to keep the torch of Ravian traditions lit with greater glow. “We need embrace the latest trends while at same time preserving our glorious traditions is equally pertinent,” he said.

The new GCU VC also stressed the industrial sector as well as the government needed to pump in the much needed finance into the universities institutions which ultimately pave way lasting economic stability in the country.

Talking about the recent crisis in which the university has pushed into due to the absence of Vice Chancellor for more than a month, Hassan Amir Shah said “we, the GCU faculty and staff, will work day-and-night to bridge the gap, and put the university on the path which leads to excellence in academics, research and sports.” He said he had summoned the details for all pending matters.

He has done post-doctoral fellowships at several reputed foreign institutions including the University of Sussex London, International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy and the Space Physics Institute, Rome. He still has research collaborations with top institutions of the world and proudly overall impact factor of his research papers exceeds 176.

Prof Dr Hassan A Shah was also founder president of GCU Academic Staff Association and had always advocated the greater role of teachers in overall development of the universities. He also remained member of the GCU Advanced Studies and Research Board for 12 years, besides heading the university’s Works Committee. He did his PhD form Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.
