SBP organizes sports event to celebrate the Independence Day

03 04Lahore: Hockey is our national game and that’s why we gave it top importance in our Independence Day sports programmes; this was stated by Director General Sports Punjab Usman Anwar while talking to media at National Hockey Stadium on Friday.

DG SBP Usman Anwar was the chief guest at Independence Day exhibition women hockey match between SBP XI and Commissioner XI.

To a question regarding future of hockey in Pakistan, Usman Anwar said: “It’s true Pakistan hockey is struggling these days but we are quite hopeful that Pakistan will come out of this bad patch strongly in near future,” he added. “Several major powers of sports world have experienced such downfalls in the past but they managed to recover through some dedicated efforts”.

DG SBP Usman Anwar said the way our youngsters are doing hard work, we can hope for a positive turnaround in the next couple of years. “We are also trying to hire foreign coaches who will impart modern training to our coaches,” he explained.

The Independence Day women hockey match began with some quick moves from either sides but after a short while torrential rain submerged the pitch and the heavy downpour forced both the teams to call off the match.

Sports Board Punjab also organized male and female pentathlon competition at Punjab Stadium. Farhat Batool, who collected 395 points in shooting and 400m race, emerged winner among girl competitors. Rushna Khan with 382 and Sumaiha Khan with 340 points, finished second and third respectively.

In the boys’ contest, the top position went to Mubashar Ali, who got 425 points followed by Arshad Ali (423) and Shujaatullah (407).
