Kh Salman directs teaching hospitals to fully functional its cardiac units

Khawaja Salman RafiqLahore: Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab on Health Kh. Salman Rafique has said that in order to reduce load of patients in PIC, cardiac units of all teaching hospitals should be fully functionalized so as to provide health facilities to the citizens.

He said this while presiding over a meeting to review measures for functionalizing of cardiac units of teaching hospitals, here today. Secretary Health Jawad Rafique Malik, DG Health Dr. Zahid Pervaiz, Chief Executive PIC Prof. Bilal Zakriya Khan, Prof. Amber Malik of Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Prof. Muhammad Zubair from Gulab Devi Hospital, Prof. Aziz ur Rehman from Services Hospital, Dr. Bilqees Akhtar of Mayo Hospital, Associate Prof. Sharif, Deputy Secretary Health Dr. Muhammad Mohsin and other officers attended the meeting.

Dr. Bilqees told that cardiac department of Mayo Hospital is facing shortage of equipment and doctors. She said that if missing facilities are provided to the Mayo Hospital, the cardiac department would start functioning at its full capacity. She said that although the cardiac unit of Mayo Hospital is facing shortage of resources, yet treatment is being provided to the cardiac patients. The participants of the meeting discussed different options and gave proposals for making the cardiology department of the teaching hospitals functional. Secretary Health Jawad Rafique Malik said that there is a need of another full-fledged institute of cardiology in Lahore to cater to the needs of over ten million population of the provincial metropolitan and its surroundings.

However, as a short term measure, the functioning of cardiac units of teaching hospitals is essential. He directed that all teaching hospitals should immediately take stock of their needs for making cardiac units fully functional and send PC-I to the Department so that maximum schemes could be included in the coming budget.

Kh. Salman Rafique asked Chief Executive Bilal Zikriya Khan to act as focal person for the teaching hospitals and prepare a presentation regarding the demands of funds, medical equipments and human resource for cardiac units of teaching hospitals.

Kh. Salman Rafique further said that he will request the Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to grant approval in this regard. He said that although the new 100-bed emergency department of PIC is under construction which would provide a relief to the patients, but keeping in view the load of cardiac diseases in our society, functioning of cardiac units of teaching hospitals is essential so that these hospitals could provide treatment and procedural facilities to cardiac patients.
