Dr. Murtaza Mughal resignes from the basic membership of Pakistan National Heart Association

Dr Ghulam Murtaza MughalLahore: President of the Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) Dr. Murtaza Mughal has resigned from the basic membership of Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH) after years of affiliation.

Sources said that he was uneasy over allegations of rampant corruption in the association and inaction by the responsible officials of the body.

Insiders said that PANAH was being run by a gang which has closed doors for democracy, accountability, audit and merit.

The body is being run as a mafia where selection is preferred over election to hide mismanagement of resources and other irregularities, they added.

Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) has provided space for an office to PANAH which is being used for marketing of private hospitals owned by Panah officials while exploitation of unsuspecting patients continued unabated.

Donations were mercilessly used for personal benefits while results of so-called elections are announced before the poling date while threatening those who wanted transparency or fare election was a norm.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal, insiders said, was also very concerned about the misuse of contributions and monopoly of some members who were manipulating elections since decades leaving no room for accountability and transparency therefor he felt compelled to quit after criticising the conduct of top officials in various meetings.

He was the first-ever life member of Panah to resign from the basic membership.
