Economics, Physical Education triumphant in GCU Annual Sports

Lahore: The departments of Economics and Physical Education lifted the prestigious team trophies in boys and girls categories respectively at the closing day of the 115th Annual Sports of the Government College University Lahore. Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashood Ahmed Khan was the Chief Guest at the prize distribution ceremony at the university’s Oval Ground while Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman was also present. The closing was marked by colourful Gymkhana events including Girls Chatti Race, Cricket Ball Throw, Pillow Fighting, Staff Children Race, Wheel Barrow Race, Musical Chair and Old Ravians Handicap Race.

The Education Minister and Vice Chancellor also took part in the tug-of-war against the Old Ravians as a message to promote the culture of sports among students and faculty members.

In his address, Rana Mashood GCU had produced not only scientists, bureaucrats, politicians but also a lot of world class athletes and all national teams of Pakistan always had representation of GCU.

Vice Chancellor Prof Rahman, in his address, congratulated the winning students and said that sports had a profound effect on the physical fitness and mental health of students, which ultimately enhanced their capabilities and efficiency, besides it also taught tolerance and created an environment of competition.

Prof Rahman said that promotion of sports ultimately curbed the inclination of youth towards negative activities and deterred them from getting swept off their feet by retrogressive forces. “Rather than getting frustrated by the ominous trends of society, students should engage themselves in sports and raise the national emblem in all international sports events,” he added.

Earlier, in the competitions, Noreen Akhtar won Chatti Race, while Musarrat Abbas won Musical Chair. Gohar Ali won the Obstacle Race, the most difficult competition of the day. Islam Khan crossed the finish line fist in Sack Race, while Muhammad Adnan and Baqir won Wheel Borrow Race. Rizwana from Physical Education remained first in 60-Metre Girls Race and Cricket Ball Throw competition. Mohsin, Tariq and Waseem won Four-Legged Race, while Abdullah Yousaf won Old Ravians Race.
