Punjab government mulls to hold several major sports events in 2015 Punjab government mulls to hold several major sports events in 2015Lahore: Punjab government has launched the process of consultation for the holding of several major sports events in 2015. In this regard, an important meeting of Consultative Group was held at National Hockey Stadium here on Friday. The meeting was presided over by Punjab Minister for Sports and Education Rana Mashud Ahmed Khan. Director General Sports Punjab Usman Anwar also addressed the meeting.

The meeting discussed the Punjab Youth Festival 2014 and prospects of future events at length. The Punjab Youth Festival 2014 was also compared with the events of rest of the world.

Addressing the meeting, Rana Mashud informed the participants that the Punjab Youth Festival 2014 was an economical event than that of India, Europe and other countries. “Several quarters opposed the idea of youth festival when we took the initiative in 2011-12 but our devoted and committed youth and management, through an exceptional team work, proved all the doubts wrong,” he said.

In his address, DG SBP Usman Anwar said that Sports Board Punjab has always played a leading role for the promotion of sports. The two editions of Punjab Youth Festival in 2012 and 2014 have played a remarkable role in highlighting the soft corner of the country throughout the world. “Our athletes established dozens of Guinness World Records during Punjab Youth Festival events. Not only in Pakistan, but our competitors exhibited their rare skills in the Guinness World Record Show held in Milan, Italy a couple of months back. The sporting teams and contingents from dozens of countries also visited Pakistan during the Punjab Youth Festival events,” he elaborated.

Highlighting the characteristics of Punjab Youth Festival, DG SBP said that the gradual progress of the massive event shows that the grand activity was being liked at every level. “In 2012, over 12 lakh people participated in the Punjab Youth Festival while the figure crossed over 40 lakh in 2014 event,” he added.

About the sports facilities and activities, DG SBP informed that all the sections of society including private sector will be invited for the smooth running of sporting facilities in the province. “We want to extract maximum benefit out of our sporting infrastructure and for that purpose we will have to utilize these facilities in a professional manner,” he elaborated.

The meeting was attended by Mian Naseer Ahmed, Dr Ayesha Ghaus, Ms Tahia Noon, Ms Hina Pervaiz Butt, M Akram Soban, Ali Zahid Khan, Abid Nawaz Khan, Kamran Shamas, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Marium Gandapur, Ali Raza Shah, M Hanif Abbasi and Dr Amjad Saqib.
