Raja Jahangir Akhtar starts hunger strike unto death for the construction of Dams

Islamabad: Social and political activist Jahangir Akhtar on Thursday started hunger strike unto death after failing to get a Constitutional petition amended to pave way for construction of mega dams.

He has demanded of the government to amend Clause 161 of the constitution which gives right of profit of any dam to the province where the power house of the dam is located. This is unjust clause and the provinces or area having reservoirs should get the profit, he said. The veteran activist asked the chief minister Punjab to initiate an inquiry as to why people of Pothohar were not informed before the upraising of Mangla dam submerging 20 thousand acres of land and hundreds of houses. Those who failed to inform the local population and paid higher compensation to the Kashmiris affectees as compare to Pothoharis should be taken to task.

Jahangir Akhtar said that all the dams except Turbela are located in different provinces or areas which has given birth to many problems. He asked the PML-N and PPP to submit amendment bill in the ongoing National Assembly session to provide relief to masses and overcome energy crisis. Millions of people have voted for PTI so that they can discharge duty of law making which is not the case, he lamented.
