PU DLIS becomes Dept. of Information Management

Lahore: After approval from the Syndicate, the nomenclature of Punjab University Department of Library and Information Sciences has been changed and the department will now be called “Department of Information Management”.

Explaining the philosophy behind the change, Chairperson Department of Information Management (DIM) Prof Dr Kanwal Ameen said that as information and knowledge was produced, recorded, preserved and used in the form of a physical book and in a building, called the library for centuries, the profession became known as librarianship. However, she explained further, the ‘information’ is no more restricted by the physical book and the physical library while the user does not always need to physically move to the library to use his needed information.

She said people can access full-text information located anywhere in the world on their palmtops, tablets. She said the information and knowledge recording journey has evolved from stone and clay tablets to electronic tablets and so do we had to, and we have as professionals.

Dr Kanwal Ameen said the phenomena has changed both the nature of our discipline and readers’ expectations from the information professionals/librarians. She said responding to these changes, professional practices and department names have been changed all over the world and we shall no more be considered just the custodians of books housed in a physical library.

She said information professionals learn to identify, evaluate, select, acquire, organize, maintain, and disseminate information without any limitations of form, time, and space. She said the discipline has developed systems and tools to meet the ever growing needs of information societies. She stated that the job market of practitioners has already been expanded beyond traditional libraries and it will expand further. Hence, the chairperson said, we at PU, aim at preparing the information professionals who can serve in a wider library, information and knowledge sector context; not only in libraries but in other organizations also where information management is needed.

It is pertinent to mention here that HEC curriculum committee had already suggested changing the nomenclature of this discipline. The PU has taken lead in bringing the required change.

The PU DIM already has the honor of becoming member of CiSAP (Consortium of i-Schools in Asia-Pacific) in 2011.
