Ombudsman Punjab save district DG Khan from financial crisis

Ombudsman Punjab Lahore: District Accounts Office Dera Ghazi Khan released payments of worth Rs. 3.21 billions on the last day of financial year and save district DG Khan from financial crisis. All the payments were illegally stopped by the former Accountant General Punjab.

Ombudsman Punjab, Javed Mahmood, took notice of stopping payments of federal, provincial and district government departments, employees and vendors of Dera Ghazi Khan district since June 09 and ordered Accountant General Punjab and Secretary Finance to submit a report to the office in 24 hours.

Ombudsman Punjab asked as to why the payments of worth billion rupees were pending with the government which might lapse on 30th June? Why the users’ ID’s of the officers and officials working in District Accounts Office Dera Ghazi Khan illegally blocked by the acting Accountant General Punjab and Secretary Finance did not take steps for the payments despite requests from the concerned? Controller General of Accounts Pakistan while taking prompt action removed acting AG Punjab from his post and posted Syed Ghazanfar Mehdi as Accountant General Punjab who soon after taking the charge, unblocked users’ IDs of officials of DAO Dera Ghazi Khan, authorizing pending payments.

DAO Dera Ghazi Khan released an amount of Rs. 813.9 millions to District Government, Rs. 2.38 billions to provincial government departments and Rs. 190 millions to federal government departments on the last day of financial year.

All the payments were made on account of salaries, pension, Zakat Fund, financial benefit of government servants, contingent, supplies and development projects. Employees of district, provincial and federal governments in DG Khan, civil society, contractors and suppliers to the government agencies have appreciated Ombudsman Punjab’s action for taking prompt notice of the issue. Directions issued by the Governor State Bank of Pakistan to keep open the schedule banks on June 30th also made the payment process possible.
