Pakistan is custodian of an ancient civilization: Rana Mashhood Ahmed

Lahore: Punjab Archaeology Department has decided to set up “Heritage Study Centre” in Sahiwal Campus of COMSATS Institute of Information Technology.

A ceremony of signing memorandum of understanding was held between Punjab government and COMSATS in the provincial office of Punjab Sports Board in the presence of Provincial Minister for Education, Sports and Archaeology Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan.

According to MoU, a two years BS (Liberal Arts) is being initiated in Sahiwal campus of COMSATS in which specialized courses will be conducted for the students in history, archaeology, regional geography, arthopology, tourism and geographical information system.

The Minister said that Pakistan is custodian of an ancient civilization and culture of the world which is called civilization of Sindh Valley and Harappa is its biggest centre. The Minister lamented that former governments did not conserve this important heritage. He said that the ruins of Harappa spreading over 130 acres of land are being destroyed as the local people pay no attention to it. He said that the present government has made payment of Rs. 18 crore for retrieving 340 kanal land from the grabber being used for cultivation purposes which also include the expenditure of construction of boundary wall on Harappa site.

He said that archaeologists from all over the world will be invited to come to COMSATS institute Sahiwal campus and where boarding and lodging facilities will be provided to them so that the excavation of Harappa ruins could be completed in a scientific manner.

Rana Mashhood Ahmed informed that Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has ordered Punjab Archaeology Department for historical mapping of the whole province. He said that monuments of every important event will be constructed. He said that about 450 heritage sites have been discovered in Punjab and he being a Minister for Youth Affairs and Education has decided to set up heritage club in local educational institutions of every area.
