Punjab judo girls win two gold, three bronze medals

Lahore: The Punjab girls judo team in its maiden appearance performed brilliantly in the Pakistan Sports Board-organised Inter-provincial Under-16 Judo Championship winning two gold medals and three bronze.

The competitions which were held at Islamabad’s Jinnah Sports Complex from April 15 to 17 had the scrutiny of the players and weigh in of the participating players on the opening day.

The following day three competitions were held in which Punjab girls won two gold medals in 35 and 40 kgs weight classes. Mahak took the 35 kg category gold while Aiysha Ayub of Punjab was declared the winner after the KPK player Kalsoom was found overage. A protest was lodged against Kalsoom who won gold medal but she turned out to be overage and was stripped of gold medal. Nimra Javed of Punjab won the first bronze medal for his province in the 57 kgs weight class.

On the final day of the championship, Punjab girls won another two bronze medals. Asma was placed third in 44 kgs body weight class while Zainab also won bronze medal in 52 kgs category. The organisers have however, held the decision of the final team winner following protests against some of the players and the winner team will be announced by them in a day or two.
