CM presides meeting regarding libraries and archives in Punjab

CM PUNJAB-1 (3)Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Najam Sethi presided over a high level meeting regarding libraries and archives in Punjab at Chief Minister’s Secretariat today.

Secretaries Archives, Higher Education and Schools Education, DG Libraries, Director Archives and concerned officials attended the meeting. This is the first time that any Chief Minister held meeting regarding libraries. Secretary Archives Oriya Maqbool Jan gave a briefing to the Chief Minister regarding archives and libraries.

Addressing the meeting, Najam Sethi said that libraries play an important role in promoting the trend of book reading among the people. He said that maintenance of libraries and conservation of rare books is utmost essential. He said that archeological sites and artifacts are our heritage and their protection is our social and national obligation. He said that the societies disregarding their culture cannot flourish. He said that the books are the source of knowledge and we should take full benefit from them.

The Chief Minister directed that the process of uploading the archive material should be expedited for the easy access of people and researchers. He said that public sector libraries should be further improved. Najam Sethi directed that Punjab Library Foundation should be activated and reconstitution of board of governors of libraries be considered. The meeting also discussed the proposal of giving laptops to public sector libraries for connecting them with internet.
