JI demands EC to comply with SC orders in letter and spirit

Lahore: Acting Ameer of the Jamaat e Islami, Pakistan, Ch. Muhammad
Aslam Saleemi, has called upon the Election Commission to comply with the Supreme Court orders for fresh delimitation of constituencies and preparation of voters lists in Karachi to discharge its responsibility of holding fair, free and transparent elections.

In a press statement here on Sunday, he said that all the political parties except the MQM had serious objections over the delimitation of constituencies as well as the electoral lists of Karachi. They believed that Karachi delimitation and the voters lists had been prepared under the pressure of an ethnic organization which alone could benefit from these. He said, the Supreme Court had taken notice of the protest by the political parties and the people in this respect and ordered fresh delimitation of constituencies and verification of the voters lists under the supervision of the armed forces. However, the Election Commission termed the fresh delimitation of constituencies as impracticable while the verification of the voters lists under the army s supervision had also not been accomplished properly.

The JI acting Ameer said the Supreme Court had also held that fresh delimitations could be made without fresh census. However, it appeared that the Election Commission was not willing to comply with the apex court order although it was its constitutional duty to hold fair, free and transparent elections.
