JI welcomes SC order for correction of Karachi voters

Lahore: Ameer, Jamaat e Islami, Pakistan, Syed Munawar Hasan, has welcomed the Supreme Court order for door to door survey by the armed forces to verify the voters in Karachi.

In a press statement on Wednesday, he said the apex court verdict on a petition field by the JI would help in the elimination of bogus votes and holding fair and transparent elections.
Besides, he said, the officers at the Election Commission office in Karachi were partial who must be transferred and in their place, officers known for integrity and having good reputation be posted in Karachi.

Syed Munawar Hasan said that as many as fourteen parties in Karachi were in agreement with the SC order for new delimitation of constituencies in the port city and only the MQM was opposing that for obvious reasons. He said that during Pervez Musharraf’s period, the MQM had been successful in the delimitation of constituencies according to its choice and now it had managed the registration of votes according to its liking.

He pointed out that a private TV channel had established this fact by releasing the recording of a dialogue between two officials of the Election Commission in which one of them was trying to prevent the other from passing on the voters lists to the MQM sector office and the other admitted that he was working for the sector office and not the Election Commission.

The JI Ameer said under MQM’s pressure, the votes of more than three million people residing in Karachi had been transferred to their permanent addresses outside Karachi. On the other hand, thousands of votes had been registered against fictitious addresses of schools and hotels. For instance, more than six hundred votes had been registered at a house measuring only one hundred yards. These methods had been adopted to facilitate rigging and to highjack the election, he said.

He sad the MQM was strongly opposing door to door survey of votes under the army’s supervision and fresh delimitation of constituencies as this would expose its pre poll rigging plans. He said, the elections in Karachi had been hijacked the same way even the past.
