Lahore: Khawaja Salman Rafique has issued instructions for further accelerating dengue surveillance and larvaeciding campaign and intensifying monitoring by surveillance teams in view of rising growth of dengue larvae in some towns of the provincial metropolis.
He was presiding over a high level meeting to review the latest dengue situation. Member National Assembly Mian Marghoob Ahmad, Members Provincial Assembly Khawaja Imran Nazeer, Ch. Shahbaz Ahmad, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Nadeem Hassan Asif, Secretary Health Punjab Arif Nadeem, Secretary Local Government Khizar Hayat Gondal, Commissioner Lahore Jawad Rafique Malik, District Coordination Officer Noor-ul-Amin Mangal, Director General Health Dr. Nisar Cheema, Director General Public Relations Athar Ali Khan and senior officers of ITB, Special Branch and other departments were also present on the occasion. Secretary Health informed that 39 confirmed dengue cases have been reported during last eight months out of which 19 belong to Lahore and six patients are still under treatment at Mayo Hospital at present. He said that more than one thousand cases had been reported during the corresponding period last year and compared to that the number of dengue patients so far is very low. However, he said that dengue larva is being reported from some areas and there is need to remain alert. He said that the arrangements for the treatment of dengue patients are complete in hospitals. Secretary Local Government informed that 15 mobile teams have been constituted which have been tasked with the dengue surveillance at junkyards, abandoned sites and basements of buildings and have achieved much success.
Commissioner Lahore Division informed the meeting that dengue surveillance and larvaeciding is continuing at union council level in the city. He said that larvaeciding day will be observed in Lahore on September 9 and special campaign will be launched for this purpose. A special monitoring cell has been set up at DCO office Lahore. He said that the people will have to fulfill their responsibility regarding eradication of dengue larvae in the houses so that the menace could be brought under control. He said that larvae is being found in the houses, stores and basements of large buildings, therefore, the people should discharge their responsibility regarding cleanliness of their premises. DCO Lahore informed that 20 lakh pamphlets regarding dengue will be distributed during anti-polio campaign. Director General Public Relations Athar Ali Khan gave a briefing regarding the publicity campaign for promoting public awareness regarding dengue. DIG Special Branch informed the meeting regarding cleanliness at government buildings, hospitals, graveyards, parks, tyre shops, ablution places of mosques and educational institutions.
