Lahore:Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that despite protracted loadshedding, Punjab Government is depending on its own resources and ensuring supply of potable water to the citizens. He said that a complaints cell has also been set up in the WASA head office for the convenience of the people and they can contact on help line 1334 in case of any complaint. The Chief Minister said that water is a basic necessity and supply of water to the citizens is our duty. He said that the efforts of elected representatives and the concerned departments with regard to supply of drinking water to the citizens are laudable. He directed that assembly members should also visit their constituencies during night and keep an eye on the supply of water.
He was presiding over a meeting regarding supply of water to the citizens in his tent office at Minar-e-Pakistan today. Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Mashhood Ahmed, Provincial Minister Ch. Abdul Ghafoor, Members National and Provincial Assembly, heads of development authorities, Commissioner and DCO Lahore and concerned officers attended the meeting. Secretary Housing gave a briefing with regard to implementation of decisions and steps taken for supply of water to the citizens.
Addressing the meeting Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif said that people were becoming jobless due to closure of industries by the long outages and now they are deprived of basic necessity like water. He said that inefficient rulers have made the life of the people miserable but they cannot be left at the mercy of the situation. He said that we are with the people in this hour of trial. The Chief Minister said that setting up of tent office at Minar-e-Pakistan to make the people realize that Punjab government is standing with them in this hour of trial. The Chief Minister directed that generators for tubewells should be acquired on rent. He said that companies supplying generators should immediately be contacted for this purpose and generators should be obtained wherever these are available. He said that the work of getting generators for supply of water to the citizens be done on war footing. He directed that planning should also be made for operating tubewells on solar energy instead of electricity and generators. He said that we are passing through a difficult situation but it is the need of the hour that the problems of people should be redressed with devotion. The Chief Minister said that the crime committees headed by MNA Mian Marghoob Ahmed and MPA Ch. Shahbaz could perform their duties devotedly and all departments should extend complete cooperation to them. He directed that the complaint cells set up in the offices of WASA should also discharge its duties efficiently and the 3-member committees should monitor the performance of these cells.
Assembly members informed the meeting about the visits to their constituencies and added that the situation of supply of water has improved significantly due to government steps. They said that people recognize the sincere efforts of Khadim-e-Punjab regarding supply of water to the people and are praying for him. Secretary Housing while giving briefing about the steps taken for supply of water told that potable water is being provided to the citizens through 61 water tankers and work has been started on the projects of installing new tubewells after identifying 69 places. The meeting was told that a case been registered against the persons responsible for installing sub-standard tubewells in Karim Park and two persons have been arrested.
